One very cool thing about the interwebs is that it makes it easier for people to coalesce around topics of common interest. Like weird sex, or Justin Bieber (the two are assumed by the author to be exclusive). When it comes to cars, people come to sites like this one to find out a little more than the corporate PR flacks dish out. Readers are hungry for information relative to their driving lives and how a car or new automotive technology can impact it.
I recently found a site,VW TDI: Truth or Dare. It’s sponsored by VW, but instead of endless amounts of oppressive corporate product optimism, it’s actually full of information perfect for people looking to buy a TDI. Why? Because the most valuable site content comes from current and former TDI owners.
At VW TDI, you’ll find a section called Tank Wars. Tank Wars is a section where TDI owners log their miles and current MPGs. If you’re worried about people gaming the system, check out the process required to join and post entries to Tank Wars:
- Join Tank Wars using Facebook Connect, below
- Set up your Tank Wars profile
To Join:
- To Compete:
- While in park, reset your TDI vehicle’s trip computer.
- Drive for a minimum of 15 miles. There is no maximum.
- Come to a stop and put your TDI model in Park.
- Take a picture of your instrument panel showing your average trip MPG. Use the example to ensure a valid source.
- Go to your profile and enter your MPG, and upload your instrument panel photo as evidence, along with any other photos you choose.
- Post as often as you like to achieve your best results
For me, this is a bit better than similar sites where you enter your odometer mileage and gallons tanked.
IF you check out the site, and I think you should, you’ll see that the leaders are getting 70 and 80 mpg in their TDIs. Click on a person’s name or avatar, and you’ll see their driving tips that helped them attain the high mileage. It’s human to be skeptical, to think that 88.7 mpg is unattainable.
But given the process, and the history of high mileage in diesel engines, if they guy is lying, it’s probably safe to assume he’s still getting 40-50 mpg. Is that kind of economy all that bad?
