Somewhere there’s a “hater” that’s groaning in anguish, because the marque that set the standard for the modern performance sedan is going hybrid. According to BMW Coop.com, the inimitable BMW 3-Series will add a hybrid to their 2012 model year lineup.
Don’t just take it from the BMW Coop. Read the words of Dr. Norbert Reithofer, BMWs Global Chairman of the Board:
Our goal is sustainable mobility…A few weeks ago, we launched two BMW hybrids, the X6 and the 7 Series. So our state-of-the-art BMW ActiveHybrid technology has made the leap into series production. Our top priority is the large model series because this is where the savings potential is greatest.
As early as next year, the new BMW 5 Series will also be available as a full hybrid. And we are anticipating the hybridization of further models series, such as the BMW 3 Series. We also work with modules in this field, choosing the most suitable hybrid solution for the respective model.
What does this say about diesel? Who knows. But I am willing to say that the hybrid as it appears in the Prius, or Ford Fusion isn’t going to be the same as what we’ll get in the new 3. Look for a lighter and more technologically advanced version of the X6 ActiveHybrid.
Hybrid is here to stay. And to celebrate, here’s a great BMW 320i commercial from back in the day…
